Internet Level (IP, internet protocol)

This protocol manages node addressing and correct routing of packets. Each node is assigned an IP address that uniquely identifies it on the network. Each network is limited by a mask (subnet mask) that is useful for determining correct routing of the packet.By using its IP and subnet mask, a host can see if its packet has to be addressed to:
  • another host on its subnetwork
  • another host on another subnetwork
  • a host on an outside network
